Thanksgiving=Documentaries!

Oh, Thanksgiving... The best part of having a Thursday off is... hmm. I don’t know. I had to WORK FRIDAY!! So, no. I hate having Thursday off! Screw pardoning a turkey, I want Obama to change Thanksgiving to the last Friday of the month.

Anyway, enough of my rambles. The best part of having family around is that we love watching movies together. And since T.V. sucks, what better way, than to browse Netflix on our PS3. (I know, you’re thinking how come I don’t write for Hallmark-personally, I think I’m too sentimental.)

So, what did I watch?

Well, for starters, Whip It has been playing on HBO and let me tell you. If you have not had the chance to watch this Drew Barrymore/Ellen Page film, watch it. It’s hilarious! And will make you want to join your nearest Roller Derby Team. My girls have asked to quit cheerleading in the hopes of being a badass on the roller rink. I have told them “no”.

Next, we watched Hot Tub Time Machine. If I could type the noise that makes a fart sound, I would. The movie totally had potential, but overall just kind of... sucked.

Now, on to the good stuff. What I love about Netflix Instant, is the ability to browse their indie films and documentaries. Sounds boring, but it’s not. You’d be very surprised at how many of them are accessible for instant viewing and how many of them are absolutely awesome! Here were two of my favorites from turkey day.

My first recommendation for a “must watch" Documentary is the 2010 Film, Babies. Oh, how I loved this movie. The concept is simple. To observe the life of four babies over the course of their first year of life, set in various locations around the world; from Tokyo to San Francisco, from Nambia to Mongolia.

This documentary in a single word; beautiful. And the great thing is that you do not have to be a mother to appreciate life and how it moves, regardless of culture, regardless of time. What I found so enjoyable about the different stories was watching how each family raised their baby. And regardless of wealth, even the family in Nambia still loves their child, still laughs... still hopes for the best. I really can’t say enough things, very cool movie and very cute children, except the Mongolian brother. He was kind of mean. :)

My next choice for a “must watch” documentary is the 2010 film, The Lottery.

Essentially the film focuses on four families, desperate to have their child win an opening to a public charter school that they have applied for. There are thousands of applicants and only a few seats; thus, the need for a lottery.

This documentary takes a harsh look at the public schools in Harlem, and really makes you think about “who is suffering” at the expense of all the political crap that surrounds education and funding. It was a complete eye opener for me, and only makes me appreciate the public education that my children are getting at this moment. BUT, what can we do as a society, to help those others not so lucky? I urge you to watch this film and hopefully formulate some of your own ideas, as to ways we can all help our local public schools. Education is not a privilege. It is a right that every American deserves to have. Very interesting film (and remember, there is always two sides to every story-just pointing that out).

So in the end, go watch a documentary and be inspired!

I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan

Reading Level: Young Adult
Author: Lois Duncan
Publisher: Laurel Leaf (1999)
Paperback: 208 pages

Summary; As the novel opens, teenage heroine Julie James receives a mysterious note from an elusive stalker, sinisterly reminding her of the previous summer when she and her friends killed a small boy on a bicycle in a hit-and-run accident, before covering it up. They swear to keep it a secret till death. Each one of the group then receives a unique calling cards, in the form of newspaper clippings, drawings and phone calls. However, what began as malicious mind games soon erupts into violence, and a succession of brutal attacks force the reluctant pact into taking action.

Disclaimer: I did not see the movie until after reading the book.

Being in the mood for a little action, I chose “I Know What You Did Last Summer” from my English teacher’s library. However, I’m sorry to say that this was the most boring book I’ve read in a long time. This book is like a straight line, no deviations. Nothing happens! All this book is about, is a bunch of teens consumed with guilt because they were evil jerks that thought only of themselves. As a 12 year old in junior high, I get enough of those evil jerks in school, thank you very much.

Don’t get me wrong, I love psychological thrillers (one of my favorite movies is Psycho). But when all you read is how sorry a group of teens are... blah... blah... blah... you get a little annoyed.

After finishing the book, I ordered the movie. What a huge difference! The movie was way better than the book (I mean in terms of action).

Overall, I just didn’t feel the book was exciting; in fact it was anti-climatic, even up to the very end when the stalker is revealed. Sorry, the book only gets two stars from me.

Book Blog Hop and Feature & Follow Friday!

Book Blogger Hop

It's that time again! The book blog hop was created by Jen at Crazy For Books, as a way to find and get to know each other-book lover and/or book blogger.

Here is this week's question: "Since Thanksgiving is coming up next week, let's use this week's hop to share what we are most thankful for and what are holiday traditions are."

A: I have to admit, I am most thankful that I stumbled across Twilight (thanks to Noe). It was because of those books, that I fell back into reading, and then stumbled into writing. It kind of saved me at a time, where I was feeling very stifled at work and unproductive in life. I had no passions, no goals. Because of those crazy books: I found blogs, found others with the same interests as me, found my mojo. (Crazy what a book can do for you!) - Suz

As for traditions, we really don't have any. We kind of roll with it each year. In the previous years, we had been going to our friends house (who also moved to Hawaii from Southern Orange County, CA) and we have merged into one big family. I think our main goal this year is to support organic and local farmers- so we are purchasing our meal from Whole Foods. That's about it. How about you?

Over at Parajunkee.com, Ginger at GReads asks, "How long have you been book blogging?"

Well, we have only been book blogging since May, but we absolutely love it. Our goal is really to share our reviews of books that we come across, plain and simple.

As for blogging, I've been doing that for some time. Remember when I said I loved Twilight? Yeah, um, well... I have a separate blog for those whims. http://truebloodtwilight.blogspot.com I've had the blog since last year and it's mainly a way to fangirl over my two favorite things, True Blood and Twilight. Duh!

How about you? Any other blogs? Let me know! I'm interested in everything!!

Okay folks, have a great weekend. Let us know if you are new followers (so we can return the love) and go see Harry Potter!!

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows-Part 1

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part I
(Rated PG-13)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the seventh and final installement, presented in two parts: November 2010 and July 2011.

In the beginning of the movie we find Harry Potter being forced to move in secrecy, as news to his whereabouts are consistently leaked to Lord Voldemort. Harry is being hunted, and his only way to survive, let alone restore order within the world of magic, is to find and destroy all the horcruxes.

From the beginning, with Chamber of Secrets (2001), I have followed the lives of these children and have been in awe of the magical and mysterious world that J.K. Rowling has created, and Warner Bros. has brought to life. I'm not even going to lie. I'm sad that it is coming to an end.

My children (my son is now 18) have grown with this book/film series, and as Harry, Ron and Hermione have blossomed and matured. So has my fondness for the series.

Plot:

Much like The Lord of the Rings, this film (part I) focused on the journey and the troubles that transpire along the way as the three are burdened with the task of carrying a horcruxe with them until the three are able to find a way to destroy it (while in hiding). But the object is evil, and has a way of getting into the minds of the children, causing them to become aggitated and angry at each other. The problem is there is no one they can trust, as Lord Valdemort has infiltrated the Ministry of Magic, and regardless of whatever entities that try to pull them a part. They must fight the urge to resist one another and stick together because now they need each other more than ever.

Special Effects:

It seems as the children have gotten older, so has the darkness within the films. I would highly recommend you think twice about bringing little ones under 5. My 10 year old jumped several times, as the movie is LOUD and has many moments where things pop out at you.

But as always, the scenery is spectacular (again, I compare to Lord of the Rings with wide sweeping shots) and the effects are awesome! My daughter would like an elf by the way.

Highlights:

As always, the dialogue is witty and the delivery is on cue. But my highlight will be the unsual break from its normal style of presentation to explain what is “the Deathly Hallows". I LOVED IT!! It was like a paper puppets. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!

My conclusion:

Though I did hear a small little boy yawn, the 2.5 hours is necessary as the film series nears its end (*sniff* I will miss Hogwarts and wizardry, potions and quidditch). It's a long movie, without a doubt. But it ended where it needed to, and thankfully Warner Bros. is not making you wait a whole year to see the finale. Worth your money! Go see in the theatre.

Cast and Credits:
Directed by David Yates
Daniel Radcliffe-Harry Potter
Emma Watson-Hermione Granger
Rupert Grint-Ron Weasley

Book Blogger Hop and Feature and Follow Friday!

Book Blogger Hop

In the spirit of the Twitter Friday Follow, the Book Blogger Hop is a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and share our love of the written word! This weekly BOOK PARTY is an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books! It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs to read! So, grab the logo, post about the Hop on your blog, and start HOPPING through the list of blogs that are posted in the Linky list below!!

This week's question comes from Christina at The Paperback Princess: "If you find a book that looks interesting but is a part of a series, do you always start at the first title?"

Noe: Yes, but if I don't enjoy it, I will not finish it (Pretty Little Liars).
Suz: Same here, I always start from the beginning but doesn't mean I will finish the series (House of Nights-I seriously lost interest by the 7th book. )

Next up over at Parajunkee's Feature and Follow, we have Jackie at Insane Hussein. Her question was, "What is your usual monthly book budget?"

Good question, but we don't have a budget nor do we press upon ourselves to have to read a certain amount of books in a month. Plus there are plenty of great books available for free download or pre-reads. Now that I have my iPad, I'm all about the ebooks!!

Now for a weekly wrap-up!

Who Got Liz Gardner by Elizabeth Allen: Review, Interview and Giveaway!!

Reading Level: Adult Fiction, tales of sexy awesomeness and heartfelt memories.
Author: Elizabeth Allen
Publisher: YouWriteOn, 3rd Edition
My format: E-book Amazon kindle for Ipad (available in paperback 522 pages)

Summary: WHO GOT LIZ GARDNER,is a coming-of-age novel about the (mis)adventures of a dysfunctional, self-centered but essentially good-hearted aspiring actress growing up during the hedonistic 70s and 80s. A first-person narrative, the story is mostly set in New York City and later Los Angeles, as Liz seeks to find herself and hopefully bump into a decent man along the way. And let me tell you, there's a lot of bumping required...

The daughter of a five-time divorced drama queen and a thoroughly despicable wealthy philandering shrink, Liz starts out with more psychological baggage than most people collect in a lifetime. It's no surprise that she soon seeks out male companionship to fill her emotional void, or that the assorted men she beds invariably prove to be disposable ciphers. But instead of caving in and becoming a basket case, Liz summons up her inner moxie and sets out on her quest to find a good life and someone with whom to share it.

Backdrop:

As the summary reads, a majority of Liz’s adventures occur in New York and then later in Orange County, CA. Now, I’ve never traveled to New York, but through Liz’s eyes, I could easily picture her surroundings and her honesty in her words, had me laughing and shaking my head at many of her mishaps in Manhattan.

When she finally sets her sights on Orange County, CA (where I’m from), I laughed even harder. Liz nails it again in her truthfulness and there were so many times I found myself giggling as I completely nodded my head in agreement. (Especially the comments about Garden Grove!)

The Characters:

Liz Gardner is one of the most likable characters I’ve ever read in all my life and I could completely relate to her. As I relived her past, I found many similarities in my own. But the difference lies in Liz. She is role model of sorts for all women. She’s strong and firm, and knows what she wants. She never took crap from anybody and only grew from her mistakes, with a no-point-for-regrets attitude. If only most of us could experience life like that. Carefree, but with a purpose.

The various relationships that Liz experiences are all important as well. They make her who she is, and what I loved about them-they were imperfect and crazy, each in their own way. The author does an outstanding job of developing each love interest in its entirety-the bad, the good, and the ugly. There is nothing taboo, there is nothing supernatural. It is simply life.

Liz's mother Radiance- Though I found myself angry many times at her mother, I also felt sorry for her as well. They say you reap what you sow, and a little of this could be applied to Radiance but in the end, I forgave her as her daughter did many years ago. Probably my favorite relationship out of the book.

The Plot: Though the story reads like an autobiography, it was more like Liz and I having a glass of wine late Saturday night-Liz confides in me, and tells me her entire story. We laugh, tear up, and sigh.

It is a story of one woman's journey; colorful but endearing.

My Conclusion: I recommend this book to everyone! It was such a pleasure to read, and I was entertained to the very end. This story had me pissed off, worried, laughing hysterically, and crying like a freaking baby. I was a mess, as I came upon the ending but in a good way. I had been through so much with this character, that to see her story come to end, made me feel the same way I felt when I watched Marley and Me (Jesus, I'm starting to get teary eyed now).

This book gets five stars!!

INTERVIEW:

Hi Liz, would you be so kind to introduce yourself and tell us where you’re from?

Liz Allen: Sure, I’m Elizabeth Allen but I go by Liz and I’m originally from Tampa, Florida. I have lived in New York City and Los Angeles (just like our main character…) and now find myself in Orlando, Florida with a husband, a daughter, a dog, a mortgage and annual Disney passes.

Who Got Liz Gardner is a sexy, fun and addicting story-Is this your first book?

Liz Allen: Yes. I’ve wanted to write this story for decades but never thought I had any ability as a writer to do so. I’m an avid reader and always felt if I can’t make people feel the way so and so made me feel, then why bother? Once I did put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) I realized all I cared about was writing something that would make some sort of difference in people’s lives. If you laugh out loud, cry or think just once – why would she do that? I would have… - then I have been successful.

Liz, as a reader I found myself completely taken by how enthralled I became at another person’s journey. I have to marvel at your writing, because it was realistic and down to earth. May I ask? Is this character based on your own personal experiences?

Liz Allen: Yes she is. Of course you know most writers use their personal experiences in their work. I call WGLG and the books that follow in the series fiction although they could be called embellished memoirs. Most names have been changed to protect the living (and me!). For example, Radiance really was my mother’s true name. But do you think the real-life Chris would ever want to step up and say “Hey! That’s me!”? On the other hand, the real-life Tanner would probably be proud as a peacock but his wife might not be thrilled to learn of his antics when he was younger.

Your character Liz Gardner is quite the connoisseur of all things sexual; would you consider yourself to be so liberal?

Liz Allen: Hmmm, this must be answered delicately. Let’s just say, most men would like their woman to be an iron chef in the kitchen and a slut in the bedroom. That said, all it takes is dedication, creativity and a willingness to take a risk or two in order to excel in either room. And I consider myself pretty freaking creative! How’s that?

As I said, I really enjoyed your story. Do you have plans for another release? Any projects you’d like to share?

Liz Allen: Thank you. Book Two – Discovering Arugula – is due for release next month. I’m very excited and initial reactions have been extremely enthusiastic. It could be considered a sequel but readers of WGLG will find it actually fills a huge gap I intentionally left toward the end of the book. Ultimately the series will be three books, maybe four.

My steamy short story – A Dark Secluded Place – will be published in the anthology Exes with Benefits sometime this winter.

I’m also working on a young adult/science fiction book with my daughter. It’s a cross between Charlotte’s Web and Invasion of the Body Snatchers…

Oh and speaking of making a difference, I’ve had a short story based on Radiance published in a book called Wisdom of our Mothers. In honor of those mothers doing their work in the most difficult of circumstances, editor Eric Bowen has pledged to donate one-half of his profits from the sale of this book to shelters for women and their children who are escaping abusive relationships. Needless to say, I’m very proud to be part of this anthology.

I’m not terrific at keeping up my blog at present, but I do maintain my website and try to keep it current. http://www.elizabeth-allen.com/index.html

Mahalo to Liz!!

Due Date directed by Todd Phillips

Due Date
(Rated PG-13)

From director Todd Phillips, “Due Date” stars Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis as two unlikely companions who are thrown together on a road trip that turns out to be as life-changing as it is outrageous. Downey plays Peter Highman, an expectant first-time father whose wife’s due date is a mere five days away. As Peter hurries to catch a flight home from Atlanta to be at her side for the birth, his best intentions go completely awry when a chance encounter with aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis) forces Peter to hitch a ride with Ethan—on what turns out to be a cross-country road trip that will ultimately destroy several cars, numerous friendships and Peter’s last nerve.

I'm a huge fan of The Hangover, so when I had the opportunity to preview Due Date, I got extremely giddy. Now, I want to take a moment to discuss Todd Phillips and The Hangover. I know there are people out there that did not think that movie was funny. I have a few comments: 1) Sometimes it helps if you see these type of crude-humor films with an audience. The contagious giggles often soften your own personal views, and you'd be surprised at how you find yourself laughing out loud to mishaps that you might not normally think is funny. 2) It's a freaking comedy!! Lighten up!

With that being said, I shall continue my review.

I love both actors in this film and honest to god, Robert Downey Jr. can do no wrong in my eyes. In fact, the older he gets, the hotter this man has become to me. Oh wait, I am straying from my review. What I like about him is that he's able to do action (yes, the crap they do in this film is physically demanding), straight-laced (he plays an architect trying to get home to witness the birth of his child) and comedy (surprisingly, he's hilarious).

And Zach... I love Zach beyond words. He plays a very naive and innocent man, who just attended his father's funeral. With ashes in hand, he is trying to get to Hollywood where he can meet with casting directors to appear on "Two and Half Men". Don't ask me why that is funny, but the specifics to his appearance are hilarious.

Now without telling you every single moment that made me almost pee, let me just give you three points.

1) There is a masturbating French Bull dog named Sunny. Enough said.
2) There is a substantial amount of medicinal herbs being smoked-I received a "contact high" from just watching.
3) As always, the humor can be a little harsh. But if you loved "The Hangover" and "Old School", you'll be fine plus you might even recognize a few of the background actors.

Bottom line "Due Date" delivered (no pun intended)! I say go see it but do not bring your children!

Due Date hits theatres this Friday, November 5th 2010.
