Fallen by Lauren Kate

Summary: YA book

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Noe: Um, I did not finish this book. About half way through, I just became too bored, and finally put it down. Sooo, I will let my mom review this.

Suz: *Sighs* Where to begin? Let's start with the overall concept of the book. Good vs. Evil, fallen angels, a familiar imperishable but forbidden love. (Actually to be honest, I don't understand why it is forbidden, but I may not have been paying attention.) Sounds intriguing, right?

It would be, except somehow this love is tied into a larger scheme of things. End times? The fall of man, what? Again, did I miss something in the book?

To be honest, I felt like Noe did, in the fact that the first half of the book was hard to read. In my opinion it was boring, too. I found myself distant from the characters and you know what? If on the first day of school, the guy I liked, flipped me off... That boy would get a serious verbal lashing from me. But I'm not Luce. So back to the book.

I'll just blast right in with my dislikes and they really aren't major, just simply dislikes. Daniel bothered me. I won't tear apart the book looking for reasons, he just did. Of course I'd be dead, or something worst, cause I would have fallen for Cam. But Luce can’t, right? She's inexplicably is drawn to Daniel. Doomed to repeat history, over and over, and over again. (Who inflicted this punishment? I hope this will be answered in the second book.)

Then the ending. First, did Luce ever kill that boy? Or was that the shadows? I was under the impression that the shadows couldn't hurt anybody, but am I wrong? Last, why does it depend on Luce? What is "it" that we are dealing with? Why is Luce important?

Again, maybe it's just that I have many questions, and maybe I just have missed the answers blaring right there in the book in front of me. (I blame Hush, Hush. I read that first, and I couldn't get that book out of my head, so that might be why I stalled with Fallen.)

So my overall thought, is I would recommend this book. Why? Because where as Noe did not like it, I did; you might love it. As I said, the concept has potential and I'm hoping that the next book, Torment, will help me understand this plot line better.

So I give Fallen....

500 Days of Summer directed by Marc Webb

Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Girl doesn't.

This is not a love story. This is a story about love.

Staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.
Rated PG-13 for sexual material and lanugage.
Available on DVD and Blu-Ray. (Release date was 8/2009)

When this movie came out in theatres, I really, REALLY wanted to see it. There were good reviews, and indifferent reviews, but the thing is, I love these two main actors; Joseph since his days on the hit show Third Rock From The Sun and 10 Ten Things I Hate About You, and Zooey, most notably from Elf and Bridge To Terabithia.

So since I didn't manage to catch in the theatre, I waited for it on DVD. Finally, after all that time, I was able to watch it this last weekend.

Do you see the few lines that describe the film? Yeah. That is exactly what the movie is about. It is not a love story, but as it states, a story about love.

What I adored about the film, is that it is unique. It mimics a fairy tale by being narrated by the infamous, story teller. The movie uses humor and a great soundtrack to tell a dark tale. One of a young man, blinded by love, unable to see what he really needs to see to be happy in life. If the character, played by Joseph, could explain in his words the moral of the story, it would be that "There are no soul mates, only happenings."

As I've heard people call this, I would have to agree. It is a black comedy (yes, it's actually funny); as the film jumps from day 1, to day 200, then to day 11, etc.. you get to watch in an unusual manner, doomed love. Zooey plays a great carefree gal, and Joseph as always, captures a gentleman to a 'T'. The film needless to say is different, humorous, dark, irritating, and then glorious. Also there is a killer soundtrack! (I freaking love The Smiths!) To check out the music, click here.

I do recommend renting this film, and I give it;

What In The World Is IMAX and 3D?

First off. If you want something technical, check out this very detailed blog post over at 3D-Vision. It is awesome.

Now, if you want me to attempt to explain. I’ll do my best. Ten thousand noodle lashings for me, if I have misinformed! I am no expert. I’m just a mom that spends thousands of dollars each year on renting out screen rooms for charity events. And I love movies. Period.

So what is IMAX? It's a film format and projection standard created by a Canadian company called, you guessed it; IMAX corporation.

Where a standard screen might be 30'-40' feet high, an IMAX screen can vary from 51'-71' feet high (sometimes even larger). A large misconception is that the screens were supposed to be curved. No, the standard is a flat rectangular screen, only IMAX Dome theatres have the large circular screens. All IMAX theatres can play 3D.

Does a movie have to be shot on IMAX film? Yes, and without getting my brain all worked up, we'll give one example. The purpose to IMAX is to create a higher resolution of image by using a larger film frame, thus using 70 mm print film. The IMAX projection is meant to compliment this and thus a unique aspect of it, is that the sound is actually separate from the film. Whew!!! That was a lot of info. Anyway, this is why the IMAX theatres destroy your ears with a plethora of speakers, surrounding you in awe inspiring noise, creating a three dimensional effect, as well as scaring the crap out of you when loud explosions happen. Did you know that an IMAX theatre has an exclusive radius clause which prohibits another IMAX screen from being at the very least, 25 miles near it? Just thought you'd like to know. So in summary, an IMAX experience should be better quality sound, and a larger more precise screen.

Update: There is much more information on IMAX and of course, not all screens are the same. You many check out IMAX.com or IMAX on wikipedia.

3D. Well, most of you just think 3D is another way to sucker an additional $4 out of your pocket, am I right? With most Disney movies coming out in 3D, we are forced to pay approximately $56 for a family of four. Guess, what? An average 3D IMAX ticket can vary from $15 and up, and expect a hike this summer. It's unclear how much, but speculation is about 8%-9%. That can equate to an addition $1.12 on a $14 3D ticket. So it's no surprise that families are picky about what movies they choose to see in 3D. At least, we are. Once you factor in food and drinks, you can easily be out almost $80 for a night out at the cinema. So I thought in this respect, I'd share what I know.

3D is about tricking your brain. It's creating a right and a left image, simultaneously, giving a sense of depth. To experience this, can be costly for both the film maker and the movie theatre. Equipment on both ends are costly, and this is why the ticket prices are higher than a 2D film.

Are all 3D theatres created equal? *whispers* NO! This is my little secret to you. Not all 3D movie theatres are the same, but they can be easily owned by the same company, advertise as 3D, and charge the exact same price. The difference lies in the equipment the theatre purchased to project the film. In some cases, if a theatre is trying to save money, they will opt for a 3D projector that only works well if the film was shot in 3D. If the film was made into 3D digitally, then it will not be viewed optimally at this theatre. So movies like Clash of the Titans, where the effects were done digitally after filming, will not be their best if you chose the wrong theatre.

So how do you know? You won't. If you really have a favorite movie coming out that you are desperate to see in 3D, maybe even 3D IMAX, chose a premiere location. Find a theatre that seems to be the largest of the chain, or in general has the most screens, and this is where you will find the most money invested in projection equipment.

Update: 3D is actually much more complicated than I stated. There is A LOT to it. So if you are interested, you can check out 3D film. Now we are all about being fair, and to be honest we had a commenter explain that the projector does not in fact have any thing to do with the film, nor does the cost of it.

Our response: I’m kinda going to stand by what I said. I think it does. At least that was how it was explained to me by the manager of a movie theatre. Was he right? Am I right? Well, we’ll leave it as; this is our OPINION.

So summary disclaimer:

1) If you want full definition, check out the links we provided for wikipedia.

2) I’m not an expert, and I never intended to do a 10 page post on every facet. These are just my thoughts, opinions.

3) We love movies!

The Cinderella Society by Kay Cassidy

Sixteen year old Jess Parker has always been an outsider. So when she receives an invitation to join The Cinderella Society, a secret society of the most popular girls in school, it’s like something out of a fairy tale. Swept up by the Cindys’ magical world of makeovers, and catching the eye of her Prince Charming, Jess feels like she’s finally found her chance to fit in.

Then the Wickeds–led by Jess’s arch-enemy–begin targeting innocent girls in their war against the Cindys, and Jess discovers there’s more to being a Cindy than reinventing yourself on the outside. She has unknowingly become part of a centuries-old battle of good vs. evil, and now the Cindys in charge need Jess for a mission that could change everything.

Overwhelmed, Jess wonders if The Cinderella Society made a mistake in choosing her. Is it a coincidence her new boyfriend doesn’t want to be seen with her in public? And is this glamorous, secret life even what she wants, or will she risk her own happy ending to live up to the expectations of her new sisters?

Hi Everyone! This is my first post and my first book review.

When I first started reading the TCS, I have to admit, I struggled. The first few chapters seemed to be a bit slow and uneventful. It really was just about the main character Jess, complaining on and on about how unpopular she was. This annoyed me for some reason. I just wanted to scream and say, “Get over your issues!”

Then we get to the major plot lines; The Cinderella Society. This is an organization that follow “reggies” aka regular girls, who seem to be targets of severe harassment/bullying.

Once initiated as the new leader of the Cinderella Society, Jess uses this position to take down the “wickeds” aka the mean girls.

But there is conflict. Ryan, the boy that Jess has a major crush on, is the brother of the “wickeds” leader, Lexy, who happens to also be Jess’s arch enemy because Jess won a cheerleading spot on the team and Lexy didn’t.

Ultimately Jess is able to have a relationship with Ryan. Lexy is still her same snobby self, and Jess’s confidence seems to have grown.

My dislikes: This wasn’t a bad book yet it wasn’t a book that I would lunge for if it were the last copy in Barnes and Noble. I mean if you like that kind of pep talk story well then go at it, but for me this wasn’t (like I said) a book that I would enjoy.

Noe

I give this book,

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

Summary: Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those who have fallen-and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.

Hush, Hush is one of those books where I chose to purchase it, simply because of word of mouth.

Choosing not to read the summary, all I had was the cover, and clearly by the looks of it, I knew we were dealing with a fallen Angel. This was to be my first venture into the world of these supreme beings.

That evening I began reading it and found myself consumed by the story-instantly. The next day, I took the book to work, skipped lunch and continued reading the entire hour. Then as soon as I got home, I dove back into the book and did not come up for air, till about 11pm. Thankfully my kids know how to make sandwiches!

I have never been so enthralled by a plot line since the likes of the Twilight Saga.

With regards to the concept of a fallen Angel, I was skeptical. Being a catholic, I do have preconceived notions regarding Angels but before purchasing the book, I knew that I had to put my religious beliefs aside and give myself to Becca.

What I didn't know was I was in turn, giving my heart over as well, as the story between Nora and Patch intensified. What's unique about this girl meets boy, is clearly the boy part. Who and what is Patch; and are his intentions true, is Nora safe with him? The author does an amazing job of creating suspense while delivering delicious little tidbits into Patch's world.

So your probably thinking, is there anything that I didn't like about the book, since clearly I have fallen (get it?) for Patch. Well, if I must say, it would have to be the ending. For me personally, there were too many evil villains in the kitchen, if you know what I mean, but this is truly an unfair comment because Hush, Hush is only the beginning of an overall tale and without looking at the bigger picture, that is an unfair assessment. Maybe another irritant might be that I have to wait till November 16, for the follow up book, Crescendo! Well, again that's not really a complaint. (By the way, those who are intrigued by Angels understand a name is very important. Patch's real name according to the author will be revealed in Crescendo.)

Overall, I thought the concept of a fallen angel worked into a fictional YA story; unique. (Notice how I keep fallen angel, separate from the word fictional. They exist in my book.)

The story line between Nora and Patch was riveting, thrilling and at times, very nail bitting. (Kids. Do not follow in Nora's footsteps and dress in costume, stalking young good looking fallen Angels. Not appropriate.) I absolutely loved Hush, Hush.

Suz...

So this means I have no choice but to give this book our coveted;

About Us

Aloha, I’m Suzie. I’m the mother of three wonderful children, two very lazy dogs, and one overly aggressive cat. When it comes to literature, I can pretty much read anything, but prefer fiction. Currently I'm knee deep, editing my own completed novel; Cinderella, A Tale of Lust.

Occasionally, my 14 year old daughter Noe will hop on here and post a review of a book that she's reading as well. But, for the most part she's extremely busy these days just being awesome.

And if that wasn't enough, I'm a film critic for Oahu's InsideOut Magazine, writing reviews on foreign, independent and major films. My goal is to bring awareness to the film industry as an important part of story telling, and I am desperate to preserve the integrity of the indie film industry.
